Air

If you by any chance need to continue reading this page, we feel very honored and grateful for making your decision to fly over such a long distance just for us. We are sorry for the inconvenience and will try our best to make your stay and transit effortless and comfortable.

New York or New Haven: There are arguments on both sides. If you manage to find a flight without connecting too many, without costing too much to fly you from where you are to New Haven, Connecticut, we will vote for that since you don’t have to spend another three hours (one hour transit from JFK/LGA/EWR to Grand Central/Penn Station; then two hours of train from there to New Haven). Unfortunately, chances are rare that we are lucky to find such a ticket.

Therefore, most people fly to New York first and here are the transit ideas:

From JFK

Taxi from JFK terminal to Manhattan is paid at a flat rate ($52 before tips) and the traffic is not always good. What we rather do is to take the Airtrain from your terminal to Jamaica station (15 mins), then change to Long Island Railroad (LIRR) – two stops (or 20 mins) to Penn Station. Upon arrival at Penn Station, board the next available Amtrak to New Haven (usually it is bound for Boston). In 2 hours you will arrive.

From Newark (EWR)

There is a New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) service from Newark Liberty Airport to Penn Station (25-30 mins). Upon arrival at Penn Station, board the next available Amtrak to New Haven (usually it is bound for Boston). In 2 hours you will arrive.

From Laguardia (LGA)

To be honest we haven’t taken this route before. From our best judgment, we believe a taxi from LGA to Grand Central would be the most effective solution. Upon arrival at Grand Central, board the next available Metro North to New Haven and in 2 hours you will arrive.

Airport Shuttle

There are companies running shared shuttle service from New York airports to any address in New Haven. Usually New Haven is the last stop therefore you may have few other stops in between. If there is no congested traffic on I-95, it will take approximately 2 hours to arrive. Once you make the decision, it is always good to book your shuttle online before you fly. We have tried Go Shuttle before and it is not bad (JFK to New Haven costs $55 before tips).

For those who decide to bound for New Haven by rail, you may take a taxi from New Haven Union Station to Yale old campus. Please go to Railroads section for details.
